Creative Writing is an integral part of most 11+ Grammar and Independent School entrance examinations and can often be the deciding factor in helping your child secure a place at one of the UK's highly competitive schools.
During entrance examinations, students are assessed on their creativity, sentence structure, ability to engage the reader, use of advanced vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPaG), and their overall writing quality within strict exam time limits. This course is suitable for Year 5 and Year 6 students preparing for Grammar and Independent School entrance examinations.
Our Creative Writing Course introduces students to every style of creative writing they may encounter in entrance examinations. Students learn how to adapt their writing for both fiction and non-fiction, including diary entries, stories, picture-based prompts, letters, persuasive articles, instructional writing and much more. They also develop planning techniques and practise producing imaginative writing under timed exam conditions.
Students learn how to create vivid and engaging descriptions through a range of activities, including writing from a given opening sentence, responding to picture prompts, and producing well-structured news articles that capture the reader's attention.
Develop the skills needed to write convincing speeches, balanced arguments, and formal letters of complaint. Students learn how to organise ideas, present logical arguments, and use persuasive language effectively.
Build confidence in writing engaging narratives, including imaginative science fiction stories. Students explore character development, exciting plots, effective dialogue, and descriptive settings to produce compelling stories.
Learn how to write clear and well-organised instructional and explanatory texts. Students practise creating step-by-step instructions while developing clarity, accuracy, and logical sequencing in their writing.
Students develop effective planning strategies that help organise ideas quickly before writing. Through timed exercises and creative writing checklists, they learn to manage exam time confidently while maintaining creativity and structure.
